The one guarantee that tomorrow will be better than today is personal growth.

If you didn’t achieve the goals you set for yourself then it’s time to start again and do things differently.

If you’re wondering how to improve your English speaking skills in 2024 the truth is you will have to grow as a person.

If you want 2024 to be a great year, then you will need to do things differently to make sure you change the results.

How to Improve English Speaking Skills

One of the easiest ways to guarantee your success is by establishing productive routines.

This is particularly true when it comes to being a confident English speaker and learning how to improve English speaking skills.

There is a small difference between habits and routines.

Habits are those behaviours that are virtually automatic. You don’t have to think about them you just do them, for example,  how you wash yourself in the shower is a habit.

You probably never think about this but I guarantee you do it the same way every single time.

Many of you won’t have good supporting habits or routines to promote continuous improvement when it comes to speaking English.

As a result, some of you will be anxious every time you have to speak English at work.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

It might seem like a hard thing to do but it’s actually both challenging and attainable at the same time. Let me explain…..

Most lawyers understand that English communication is an important skill they need if they want to remain competitive in an International market, and yet they don’t make the time to practice, develop or challenge themselves to improve.

Think about this for a minute.

Lawyers spend years mastering the law and have to continue to update their knowledge. However, they often don’t invest time in improving their English communication skills even though they are essential for their work.

If they do decide to practice they often don’t focus on the right things.

They follow systems they were taught in schools which are completely useless in the real world and don’t effectively teach you how to improve English speaking skills.

For example, many lawyers want to expand their vocabulary so they can sound more sophisticated.

They write down new vocabulary in a book and then never look at those words again. At the end of the year they have lots of new words that they have never looked at or used.

Chances are, you’ve experienced this too.

Maybe they make the effort to watch a film or series in English but it’s often late at night and they’re tired and it’s so hard to focus.

Studying like this isn’t easy or effective.

Distractions like tech devices, emails, or even our own stressful thoughts can stop our focus.

Not to mention, low energy after a long day at work.

So, how do you improve English speaking skills without spending hours studying?

Here are some tips:

1. Find Your Passion:

Study what you love. Forget about the technical legal words. Clients, colleagues and stakeholders need you to communicate with them and not quote a legal English dictionary. Learn how to connect with people, this is one skill AI will never be able to replace. Reflect on your interests, try new materials, and align study activities with your values. When you love what you study, immersing yourself comes naturally.

2. Eliminate Distractions:

Your mind can only focus on one thing at a time. 5 minutes of focused study is better than 30 with a distracted mind. Find a quiet space, turn off your gadgets, and dedicate time to understand the nuances of language. Discover one word, one phrase or one sentence that you can use that day.

3. Embrace Challenges:

Set goals that are ambitious yet achievable. For example, using a new word at a meeting. Completing a conversation on an unfamiliar topic. Adjust difficulty levels as your skills improve to maintain a balance that encourages growth.

4. Know Your Peak Times:

Work  smart not hard. Study during your most productive times. Early birds might prefer mornings, while night owls may find evenings more fruitful.

5. Practice Mindfulness:

Pay attention to the present moment. Anxiety and stress comes from worry about decisions in the past or anxiety about things that may happen in the future. When you focus on being present your brain works better. Not only will you feel more confident you can express yourself more clearly.
